The defect

Moisture may enter via a gap in the housing of the starter-alternator, potentially causing the component to overheat.

The hazard

If moisture enters the starter-alternator, this could cause the component to overheat. If the component overheats it may catch fire, posing a risk of injury to vehicle occupants, bystanders and/or damage to property.

The remedy

Consumers who notice a smouldering smell while the vehicle is moving should park the vehicle safely outside as soon as possible and contact an Audi dealer. As a precaution, consumers should park their vehicle outside only (avoid parking undercover) and not wash the engine until the component has been replaced.Audi Australia Pty Ltd is contacting all known owners of affected vehicles.
