The defect

Poor sealing of the steering pitman arm dust boot may allow water ingress that can result in corrosion on the ball stud at the seal contact area. If this occurs, the strength of the component can be reduced and in the worst case the pitman arm ball stud may fall when subjected to severe stress resulting in a loss of directional stability.
