The defect

Due to a software issue, the electric power steering system under certain driving conditions may become temporarily inoperable. Should this occur, steering will remain functional. However, the driver may experience a noticeable increase in steering effort, particularly when cornering.

The hazard

A sudden increase in steering effort could increase the risk of an accident-causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.

The remedy

Owners of affected vehicles can contact their preferred Volkswagen dealership to schedule an appointment as soon as possible to have the software update carried out, free of charge.
